MNJYSA announces a rule change being piloted for the Fall 2024 season that will hopefully address the prevalence of lopsided scores seen in recent years.
Beginning this season, 3 points will be awarded for a win, but if the goal differential is more than 6, only 2 points will be awarded. Our scoring system already caps the GD earned in a match at 6, but that seemed to do little to deter teams from running up scores to an excessive degree.
There are plenty of strategies teams can employ when facing a vastly inferior opponent that should make lopsided scores much less frequent, but this revised scoring system is intended as a meaningful deterrent to reverse the recent trend.
Also under consideration is whether to make the absence of lopsided scores a favorable factor when determining flight winner in the event of a tie in the season standings.
